Altair

Altair | Poland

WHY ALTAIR?

The name Altair is a direct reference to the previous system, as it is the brightest star in the constellation of the Eagle (Latin: Aquila). Moreover, the name is derived from an Arabic expression meaning ‘flying eagle’. Altair is the twelfth brightest star in the night sky and is visible to the naked eye.

Our machine of this name shines strongly on the lists of the world’s supercomputers, but most importantly, it equally supports scientists in their research and daily work.

ALTAIR SUPERCOMPUTER

Implementation work began at the end of 2020, while a part of the system was made available to the most active users as early as January 2021.

With a conventional power of 5.9 PFLops, the computer is equipped with more than 63,000 direct liquid-cooled CPU computing cores and 300TB of system memory.

The machine serves our users in Poland and Europe for engineering simulations, Big Data and Artificial Intelligence, including the use of Machine Learning technologies (Deep Learning). Altair also helps scientists with work related to nuclear physics, quantum chemistry and biology.

At the time of its debut in 2020, Altair was ranked 85th on the TOP500 – list of the world’s fastest supercomputers and 61st on the GREEN500 – list of the most energy-efficient machines. Currently, Altair is ranked 221st on the TOP500 and 128th on the GREEN500. What is more, in November 2023, Altair’s HPC storage system was the first in Poland to make the IO500 list – the fastest HPC storage systems in the world – taking a spectacular 10th place!
